GALPOT Weekly #16/13
Welcome to GALPOT Weekly #16/13 a review of the last seven posts at "Gettin' a li'l psycho on tyres".
The week started with Pick Up Monday which featured this '58 half ton Chevrolet Apache 31 with jet age detail trim.
The 5 part potted history of Morris continued on Tuesday with a look at this '55 Morris Oxford II was fitted with a B Series motor thanks to the merger between Austin and Morris in 1954, this Oxford came fitted with a column shift for the manual gearbox, 9 inch hydraulic brakes and an interior heater.
On Wednesday GALPOT visited the Six Hours of Silverstone where several teams second entries beat their number one siblings including the #2 Audi e-tron quattro of Tom Kristensen, Loic Duval and Alan McNish which beat the #1 Audi driven by reigning world sports car drivers champions Andre Lotterer, Benoit Treluyer and Marcel Fässler for overall honours and the Tourist Trophy.
Americana Thursday's post featured this Lincoln Continental Mark III which once belonged to an acquaintance Loory Munro. The Mark III allegedly came about when Ford President Lee Iacocca instructed Ford Design Vice President Gene Bordinat to "put a Rolls Royce grill on a Thunderbird" in September 1965.
This 1956 Feerari 290MM chassis #0606 was featured in Ferrari Friday's post the car won the Swedish Grand Prix in the hands of Phil Hill and Maurice Trintignant before ending up in Brazil where it was involved in an accident that
killed Fernando Mafra Moriera who raced under the name of Rio Negro.
Yesterday's post featured this DeLorean DMC-12 a car that was heavily re engineered by Lotus to make it production worthy.

Thanks to US Racer Jerry Entin I have been able to put right a few error's to a blog about the McLaren M15 I wrote a couple of years ago. Today's McLaren M15 post includes some photo's from the International Motor Speedway Archive such as the one above showing Bruce McLaren talking to Denny Hulme sitting in the car that Denny's 1970 Indy 500 challenge was to end in.

GALPOT Weekly #02/13
Welcome to GALPOT Weekly #02/13 a review of the last seven posts at "Gettin' a li'l psycho on tyres", this week there has been a cinematic/tv theme running through all the posts.
The week started celebrating Elvis Presley's 78th Birthday with a look at an Elva Mk6 of the type that stared in Viva Las Vegas alongside Elvis and Ann Margret.
On Tuesday I had a look at an MG TF 1500 of the type that Rock Hudson had a little difficulty getting in and out of in the 1959 sexcapade Pillow Talk.
An Audi Quattro of the type featured on Thursday played a staring role in the Ashes to Ashes TV series which ran from 2008 to 2010.
Around thirty Knight Industries Two Thousand's were built for the filming of the Knight Rider series, the one featured on Thursday has a Targa Top built for the 1985 series starring David 'The Hoff' Hasselhoff.
Ferrari Friday featured this Ferrari 275 GTB/4 NART Spyder of the type driven by Faye Dunaway in the Thomas Crown Affair in which she starred alongside Steve McQueen.
Yesterdays post featured one of the Lotus Esprit's, known as Wet Nellie, used in the underwater sequences of the "Spy Who Loved Me" James Bond thriller from 1977.
Star of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, the Paragon Panther is today's featured car a magical vehicle that came into the mind of James Bond author Ian Flemming when he was writing a story for his son.

Wessex Sprint - Castle Combe
This week I will be catching up with a couple of days activity at Castle Combe, a morning at Mallory Park and a visit to the Bugatti Trust at Prescott.
A couple of weeks ago I took some advice from our Prime Minister, David Cameron, and had great fun doing my bit for the motor racing community by marshaling at the Wessex Sprint, organised by the Bristol Pegasus Motor Club, of which I am a new member and the MG Car Club (SW).
A sprint is an event in which competitors race against the clock on this occasion around a single lap of the Castle Combe Circuit. Here are a few snaps taken during the lunch break and suspension of the competition.
Jeremy Hawk told me his MG J2 above has been in his family since 1953 when it was acquired for the princely sum of £85 some years later it made STD at a sprint at Castle Combe just like it did last week.
This #73 Peugeot 309 GTi was shared by Tom Siebert and Henry Siebert Saunders was completely stripped out and running with plastic side window's to reduce weight.
Car of the day IMHO, if only because of the sound of it's 5 cylinder turbocharged motor, was the #75 Audi Quattro shared by Tim Clark and Andy Tanner, wondering if anyone knows if this a genuine works car ? It certainly looked and sounded the part. Andy just beat Tim to win the Modified Limited Production Class.
The Rover V8 powered MGB Kayne Special shared by John and Jonathan Biggs ran in the Sports Libre Class.
Tim Moreton and Dean Robertson shared the 'Dick' Terrapin a Kawasaki powered vehicle with a Wharholian paint job.
I do not remember the last time I saw a Royale RP 30 in action, but the first time was around 31 short years ago ! This example driven by Bob and Anne Adams is powered by a Vauxhall 16v motor in place of the Ford Pinto with which it was originally supplied to race in Formula Ford 2000 events. Bob took the Racing Cars over 1600 cc class honours.
Proudly displaying it's V8 kills from a couple of years ago was the similarly Vauxhall, 4 cylinder, powered but methanol fuelled Pilbeam MP62 chassis #14, built in the late 1980's, of Kevin Lealan who won the Fastest Time of the Day award.
Running cars one at a time in batches of four meant my fellow start line marshals and I only got a break from the action for lunch, very nice sweet and sour chicken with rice & chips, then again later when the weather turned sunny, the sunlight interfered with the timing beam until the beam receiver was fitted with a shroud and on a couple of occasions when the Castle Combe farmer wanted to cross the track in order to bring in his hay bales.
I would recommend volunteering to be marshal to anyone who is interested in getting involved in motor sport, you will probably have a fun day and get to make a few good friends in the local motor sport community.

Woodland For The Tenacious - Spyker Silvestris V8 Prototype
If innovation were enough to guarantee success everybody would know the name Spyker and quite a few of us would probably be driving one, given that in 1903 Spyker launched a 60 hp racer that was the first motor car with a six cylinder engine, four wheel drive AND four wheel brakes.
The company motto "Nulla tenaci invia est via" translates as "For the tenacious, no road is impassable", to which might be added "even if the way is blocked for 70 years", for despite building the royal horse drawn 'Golden' carriage for the Dutch royal family in 1898, which is still in use today and introducing 6 cylinder powered vehicles, four wheel drive and four wheel braking systems, Spyker went under in 1929.
Between 1990 and 1996 Maarten de Bruijn hand built the Silvestris (translation 'Woodland') V8, seen here at Goodwood, Festival of Speed, with which he and Victor Muller would revive the Spyker brand.
Many of the design features of the Spyker C8 model which went into production in 2000 can be seen in the Silvestre which has smaller overall dimensions than the production C8.
Power for the prototype Spyker came from a 265 hp quad cam (dohc) Audi V8 attached to a similarly sourced gearbox.
The Silvestris weighing just 960 kgs 2,116 lbs is thought to be capable of 0 - 62 mph in 4.5 secs.
Builder Maarten de Bruijn still owns the Silvestris which won it's class in the Cartier Concours at Goodwood this year.
In 2005 Maarten left Spyker to start a new venture Silvestris Aquamotive which builds aluminium space frame speed boats.

200 mph Viscous Traction - Lamborghini Diablo VT 6.0
When the Diablo was launched in 1990 it was the first Lamborghini capable of over 200 mph and in the process it relieved the Ferrari F40 of 'the worlds fastest production road car' title. The design brief set by then Lamborghini owners the Swiss Mimram brothers for the Lamborghini Countach replacement back in the late eighties was relatively straight forward - Minimum speed capability 315 kph / 196 mph.
Marchello Gandini was responsible for the styling but when Chrysler took over Lamborghini in 1987 they were unimpressed and after the Chrsler Styling Centre in Detroit smoothed out the design Gandini was so unimpressed he took his original drawings which later were realised in the form of the Cizeta-Moroder V16T.
By the time this one of 251 penultimate VT 6.0 variants was built in 2000 Audi had become owners of Lamborghini and the Diablo had; acquired 4 wheel drive (Viscous Traction), an upgraded 547 hp 6 litre / 370 cui V12 and been fitted with made under licence Nissan 300 ZX Z32 head light clusters. The title of worlds fastest production car was short lived and handed on to the 213 mph Bugatti EB110 in 1991.

The slowest car they have ever built - Audi R8
For the 8th day of Christmas and first day of the New Year I present this Audi R8.
According to the on line publicity it takes 70 skilled workers to fit over 5,000 unique parts to each vehicle and build 25 of these cars a day.
These vents direct air straight through the car.
The aluminium space frame which includes 99 meters of welds, 782 punch rivets, 308 self tapping screws, and 113 weld studs takes 45 minutes to manufacture.
The R8 rides on a magnetic damping system which provides the the driver with two modes of ride, comfort or sport.
This is the first Audi to compete with Porsche it is not quite as quick to accelerate but has been demonstrated to have slightly better handling than the 997.
Powered by a 420 hp all aluminium dry sump 32 valve V8 with Fuel Stratified Injection, FSI, the R8 is capable of a 12.8 sec 1/4 mile and a top speed in excess of 185 mph.
Audi use 210 exterior LED's in the R8, 186 of them as brake lights which run at 5,700 degrees centigrade, they are said to use 50% less energy than conventional bulbs.
Expect to see racing versions of the R8 in two wheel drive form make an impact in GT3 racing in the coming year particularly at the annual 24 hour Nurburgring race.
