GALPOT Weekly #01/13

Welcome to GALPOT Weekly #01/13 a review of the last seven posts at "Gettin' a li'l psycho on tyres", I hope the new marginally more rational GALPOT Weekly numbering system does not disturb the peace too much. BLOOHOUND SSC, Mock Up, Goodwood Festival Of Speed 2013 is scheduled for a Land Speed Record (LSR) attempt at rainging the current LSR of 760.343 miles per hour to over 1000 mph by the Bristol based Bloodhound SSC team guided by present LSR holders, Richard Noble and 'driver' Wing Commander Andy Green, who set the current record with the ThrustSSC at Black Rock in 1997. As a small token of appreciation for an obscenely modest contribution to Blooddhound SSC project the "psychoontyres" legend on the tailfin of the Bloodhound SSC vehicle when it makes its LSR attempt. Find out how you too can contribute to the Bloodhound SSC Tailfin Program by clicking this link to Mondays Bloodhound SSC post. MG6 TSE GT Turbo, Summer Classics, Easter Compton The first post of the new year featured the first MG model to be sold sold in the United Kingdom since the reappearance of the MG brand now owned by Chinese manufacturer SIAC Motors who supply partial knock down (PKD) MG6 kits, engineered and styled in the United Kingdom for assembly in their facility at Longbridge, Birmingham. Just noticed I got the dates completely wrong on last weeks GALPOT Weekly so I'll just number them for the time being. This week was highlighted by two Birthday Editions of Galpot.

Daimler Sovereign Coupé

Monday started with Racer 187's birthday edition looking at a RHD Daimler Sovereign Coupé from Remscheid, Germany that is/was looking for a new home.

On Tuesday I concluded a series on vintage Vauxhalls with a brief look at a Vauxhall Bearcat a 14/40 chassis fitted with a Stutz motor.

Ford Anglia, 1957, Shakespeare County Raceway

A trip to Shakespeare County Raceway on Wednesday revealed a dinky li'l hot rod in the form of a Ford Anglia sibling of the Ford Prefect I looked at a week earlier.

Plymouth Voyager Sport

Returning to the mean streets of Bristol for Americana Thursday I had took a look at a 1975 Plymouth Voyager Sport probably as rare a sighting in this country as a Ferrari in the USA.

Ferrari 365 GTC/4, Siverstone Classic

Continuing with another prancing horse saddled for carrying extra cases of beer, on Ferrari Friday I looked at the stylishly understated 365 GTC/4 2+2.

Ewan McIntyre, Lotus 15, Oulton Park, 2011

Yesterday it was off to Silverstone and Oulton Park for a look at a couple of 2 foot tall low riding Lotus 15's.

Built by Craftsmen - Lanchester LD10 #L63579

Lanchester LD10, Castle Combe, C&SCAD

Lanchester founded as the Lanchester Engine Company Ltd in 1899 by the Lanchester brothers Frederick, George and Frank who are credited with being the first British builders of a motor car, not a horseless carriage, in 1895 which ran on a public road in 1896. The brothers are also credited with being the original purveyors of disc brakes in 1902. Fredricks uncompromising attitude to mechanical perfection led Lanchester into financial difficulties and an eventual merger with the British Daimler Company in 1931.

Lanchester LD10, Castle Combe, C&SCAD

The post war Lanchester LD10 was a compact companion to the Daimler range, like it's bigger Bretheren Lanchester's were built by craftsman at a time when most vehicles of this size were already much cheaper to build on assembly lines. Initially this model was available with a steel body by Briggs of Dagenham and later models like the one in these photographs with alloy body work by Barker.

Lanchester LD10, Castle Combe, C&SCAD

This model is powered by a 4 cylinder 40hp overhead valve engine which transmits power to the rear wheels via a 4 speed preselector gearbox. This combination of engine and geabox was considered both reasonably powerful, with a 69 mph capability and exceptionally smooth for it's time. The engine number of this particular vehicle is #18557.

Lanchester LD10, Castle Combe, C&SCAD

It is thought 3,030 examples of this model were built between 1946 and 1951. This particular vehicle, chassis L63579, was built in 1951.

With thanks to David Roots who invited me to the Classic and Sports Car Action Day at Castle Combe where these photographs were taken.

Thanks you for dropping in on today's 69 mph edition of "Gettin' a lil' psycho on tyres" I hope you will join me again tomorrow ! Don't forget to come back now !

Classic Expo - Race Retro, Stoneleigh, Coventry 2/2.

Today I am concluding my overview of the Race Retro exhibition I started yesterday.

One of the things I loved about this exhibition was exhibitors enthusiasm to show visitors

what was under the bonnet of their exhibits.

Several exhibitors displayed their handy work and craftsmanship in the form of finished motors for display.

There was far more to see than my six hour visit would allow, I did not get a chance to look in any detail at the many motor cycles on display.

The event is best described as a mini Goodwood Festival of Speed,

slightly more intimate because of the smaller crowds but still like being a kid in a toy shop.

With thanks to Tim Murray and the Bristol Pegasus Motor Club without home this blog would not have been possible.

Hope you have enjoyed my overview of the Race Retro Exhibition and that you'll join me again tomorrow for for a look at the first of a couple of vehicle manufacturers I do not recall hearing of before visiting Race Retro. Don't forget to come back now !

The Rowdy Racer - #187 1960 Daimler SP250

Today it's a great thrill to introduce the famous Rowdy Daimler and its pilot Ryan Smith known as Racer 187.

Ryan was wrenching for father in law John Aibel and his Le Mans Crosley Hotshot Sport at the Pittsburg Vintage Grand Prix in July 1995. In the paddock next to the Crosley was John Putnam who was having trouble with his red Dailmler SP250 a recently restored 'barn find'.

Ryan spent much of the meeting helping out John’s son, John Jr., replacing parts and eventually finding and temporarily fixing a fuel tank sludge problem. At the end of the meeting Ryan asked John Putnam that if he ever wanted to dispose of the Daimler to call him first.

Six years later Ryan got the call and has been running the Daimler ever since. With his wife Chief 187 acting as crew chief Ryan recalls fabulous family days out and having great fun racing in the VSCCA 'Preservation' Class with Dick Rowley in a Porsche 356 for two seasons until they were both kicked out into separate faster race classes.

The Daimler SP250 is based on a heavily modified Triumph TR3 chassis with a fiberglass body and fitted with a 140 hp 2,547 cc / 153 cui hemi head V8 designed by Edward Turner. The vehicles were in production from 1959 - 1964.

The Daimler has touched the lives of many Rowdy acquaintances, from left to right, Racer187, Chief187, MIL187, Kerry, front row Christi, RockinRouschMan, in the Daimler, ScottinCT's daughter and ML187, to the right of the Daimler, left to right, Sadie, Lauren and ScottinCT.

Ever the devoted faithful father and now with three children, left to right Rosie187, GS187 and ML187 to groom into the future generation of NASCAR winners, Ryan has taken some time out of his own racing activities while still maintaining a role within the VSCCA as Event Co-Chairman for VSCCA Vintage Races & Racing School at Pocono.

I look forward to taking up the invitation to joining the #187 crew as team windscreen washer upon Ryan’s return to the track.

I'd like to thank Ryan for kindly taking time out to sending me his photo's and story and the many members of the Daimler and Lanchester Centre Forum who have visited in anticipation of this blog.

Hope you have enjoyed today's #187 edition and will join me again tomorrow at 'Getting a lil' psycho on tyres' for some seriously big stuff in honour of all those who work hard to keep us moving in all weathers when the unexpected happens while we are in transit.
